this day in boston history

From my "Cocktail A Day" calendar:

Ale Flip

On this day in 1634 Samuel Cole opened the first tavern in Boston, Massachusetts. For a taste of quintessential tavern fare from back then, here is a traditional drink to warm and soothe the settler's spirit.

1 oz fresh lemon juice
12 oz ale
Pinch of ground ginger
1 tb sugar
1 egg yolk
1 oz brandy

In a saucepan, heat the lemon juice with 2 ounces of the ale, ginger, and sugar over moderate heat until the sugar dissolves. Beat the egg yolk into the brandy in a small bowl. Add the heated mixture to the egg yolk mixture, and beat until smooth. Pour into a beer mug, and slowly add the rest of the ale, stirring well.

I don't know about you, but this does not sound very good to me, with the egg in it. Also, how did the settlers get fresh lemons? Hot ale, no thank you.
