I had to go to CompUSA today. Ours hasn't closed. I arrived at 9:57 (I know this because I looked at the clock in my car as I pulled in) and there was a load of people outside, waiting for the store to open (good thing it was 9:57, I had no idea they opened so late in the morning). As soon as I pulled into the lot, they opened the doors (lucky me!).
I went into the store and began the quest for my item (it was for work). I found my item and headed to the checkout. Since the store had just opened and I was in there for all of 5 minutes, there weren't too many people in line. So I jumped in line. And I waited. And waited. And waited. What the hell was going on? I heard mumblings that the cashiers didn't know how to ring people up, but I recognized one of them since I come to this particular store every now and then. Anyway, word comes down the line that we need to give them our names, addresses and phone numbers and paper was passed to us so that we could write down our information. When I finally got to the register I saw that they were using EXCEL to ring up the purchases. I was horrified! The cashier had no idea how to use a computer and was absolutely lost. Turns out that their normal POS system was down and they were using their "backup" system (i.e. Microsoft Office). It was a nightmare. She had to type in all the info and then print out the "receipt" from Excel. She had no idea how to do this, so I showed her (including how to print multiple copies of the recipt). It was such a cluster fuck. I saw quite a few people leave the line and go home. I needed the item, so I stuck it out.
Once I left I looked at my homemade receipt and noticed that the total of my item, plus tax totalled zero on my receipt. Geez, I hope I don't have to return this item, I will have a great time showing them the receipt!

OMG - I was at D'angelos yesterday to get a sandwich and they were having the exact same problem! Except their solution was to right up receipts on their delivery pads, look up the prices on some master sheet, and total the order using calculators.......or their PDAs! They just kept the cash register open and were trying to make change. I felt so bad for them. They were running around like crazy!
