Racks and Next Fall

Yesterday Steven and I went to see a play called 'Next Fall'. Before we went to the play we had lunch at a new restaurant in Boca Raton called Racks Downtown Eatery & Tavern. Fort Lauderdale definitely isn't on the bleeding edge of the culinary scene and the whole "gastropub" movement is finally making its way here. We have tried ROK:BRGR and it was delicious. Steven picked out Racks for our second test of this food phenomenon. Neither of us had any grand expectations for our Saturday lunch. In fact, I didn't even know where we were going until we were walking up to the restaurant and I asked Steven about it. As he was telling me, both of our mouths dropped open when we walked into the restaurant. It was gorgeous!

The hostess (in a slinky black dress and 5" heels), showed us to our table. We must have looked like we were from another planet. All we could do was stare around us at all the things to see. Every inch of this place is a visual treat. From the ceilings that have humongous chandeliers replete with ship rope, to the giant red wood-fired oven, it's a visual whirlwind inside of Racks. The menu wasn't huge, but they had a very good selection of delicious-sounding meals. Steven opted for their open-faced meatloaf sandwich, and I chose the "Mizner" sandwich (grilled chicken breast with melted brie on crusty, buttered bread). We each had a bloody mary while we took in the sights of the place. When the food arrived, we both squealed with delight (not really, but we smiled). Steven's dish was toasted thick bread with meatloaf and gravy, with a side of creamy mashed potatoes. My sandwich came with yummy coleslaw and a small pitcher of fries. The food was pretty good, and paired with the ambiance the place, Racks is a winner. We are looking forward to going back, this time for dinner, to try some more items from their menu. The only downside was that the Bloody Mary's were $12 each, which is pretty steep (plus, Steven didn't love his as they use Clamato juice). All in all, it was a very fun lunch.

Next we headed to the Caldwell Theater in Boca to see 'Next Fall'. It is a play about two gay lovers who struggle with their spirituality (or rather, their opposing views on spirituality). The play itself was well done and the set was very cool. What was so interesting was the audience. It was all old ladies. We were shocked. We had no idea that old ladies (I'm talking an average age of around 75) would be interested in this play. There was a scene where the two main characters were making out on a couch. After the play Steven and I swapped stories about how uncomfortable that made us feel being surrounded by our grandmothers! Yesterday happened to be rainy and crummy out, so it was a perfect day for lunch and some theater!
